What Are Wood Borers?

Wood borers are the larval stage of various beetle species that lay their eggs in or on timber. When the eggs hatch, the larvae — the actual “borers” — tunnel through the wood, feeding on it as they go. This tunnelling can continue for months or years before the adult beetle emerges, leaving small, round exit holes in the timber surface. Those holes are often the first visible sign of an infestation.

The most common species found in Queensland homes include:

  • Lyctus (Powder Post Beetle) — attacks the sapwood of hardwoods, reducing it to fine powder
  • Anobium (Furniture Beetle) — commonly found in softwoods, flooring, and roof timbers
  • Bostrichid Borers — attack both hardwoods and softwoods; common across Queensland
  • Queensland Pine Beetle — specific to pine timbers, which are used widely in Queensland construction

Signs of Wood Borer Activity

The tricky thing about wood borers is that the damage happens inside the timber where you can’t see it. By the time visible signs appear, the infestation may already be well established. Here’s what to look for:

  • Exit holes — small round or oval holes (1–3mm) in timber surfaces
  • Fine dust or frass — powdery residue beneath or around affected timbers
  • Weak or crumbling timber — timber that collapses under light pressure
  • Adult beetles — small, dark beetles near windows or light sources in spring and summer

Why Gold Coast Homes Are Vulnerable

The Gold Coast’s subtropical climate — warm, humid summers and mild winters — creates ideal conditions for wood borers. Timber in subfloors, roof voids, and older hardwood framing is particularly at risk.

Many Gold Coast homes built before the 1980s used untreated hardwoods and softwoods that are highly susceptible to borer attack. In newer homes, treated timber is used, but it’s not immune — especially if moisture has compromised the treatment over time.

Wood Borers vs Termites: What’s the Difference?

People often confuse wood borers with termites, and the damage can look similar at first glance. Here are the key differences:

  1. Don’t treat it yourself — off-the-shelf sprays rarely penetrate the timber where larvae are feeding. You’ll waste money and time.
  2. Get a proper inspection — a qualified pest inspector will identify the species, assess the extent of the damage, and tell you whether treatment is needed or whether the infestation is old and inactive.
  3. Check whether it’s active — old borer damage doesn’t always mean active borers. Fresh frass and recent exit holes are the key indicators.
  4. Consider professional treatment — active infestations usually require fumigation or professional timber treatment applied by a licensed pest controller.
